China freight forwarding · 2026 ranking guide

Top 10 freight forwarding companies in China: the volume leaders, and what the ranking doesn’t tell you.

Sixteen Chinese forwarders made the Transport Topics 2026 global ocean freight Top 50 — more than any other country, and up from 11 in 2024[reference:2]. But volume leadership and fit for your shipment are two different questions. This page lists the 2026 leaders by TEU and air tonnage, shows where the two major ranking methodologies diverge, and explains which tier of forwarder actually matches an SME, an e-commerce seller or a large importer.

Before the list

Two rankings, two different questions

Most “top forwarder” lists mix ocean, air, rail and e-commerce into one number, which makes them hard to act on. This page separates the two methodologies that actually matter in 2026.

Transport Topics ranks by TEU volume. It tells you who moves the most containers. Sinotrans leads globally at 4.93 million TEU; COSCO Shipping Logistics is fifth at 1.96 million; Ningbo Port Southeast Logistics is sixth at 1.82 million. This is the ranking that matters if you are buying capacity at scale.

Armstrong & Associates ranks by a composite of logistics revenue, ocean volume and air tonnage. Its 2026 Global 25 list puts Sinotrans at #3, Kerry Logistics (KLN) at #7, COSCO at #9, CTS International (华贸物流) at #17, AWOT at #18 and CIMC Wetrans at #19. This ranking captures forwarders that are strong in air or contract logistics but do not top the pure ocean TEU table.

Neither ranking tells you who will handle a 3-CBM LCL shipment or a 200kg air cargo well. The volume leaders are built for annual tenders and large BCO accounts. For smaller shipments, the operational question is not “who is biggest” but “who has boots on the ground at your origin port and will answer the phone when a cut-off moves.” That distinction is covered in the last section.

AWOT (欧华国际) ranks #44 in ocean but #9 in air tonnage, which is why it appears in the air-focused view below rather than this ocean table.

Company profiles

The five that define the 2026 landscape

Volume alone is not a business model. These five represent distinct strategic positions: state scale, carrier control, port proximity, Asian network and multimodal ambition.

Sinotrans 中国外运

State-owned

China’s largest forwarder by revenue (RMB 96.81 billion in 2025) and the world’s #1 ocean forwarder by TEU for multiple consecutive years. Network spans 200+ countries. Sweet spot is FCL, project logistics and heavy equipment for large manufacturers and annual tenders[reference:8].

4.93M TEUGlobal #1 oceanAir #6 global

COSCO Shipping Logistics 中远海运物流

Carrier-owned

The logistics arm of COSCO Shipping Group. Direct access to vessel space on COSCO’s own fleet is the structural advantage on Asia–Europe and Asia–US lanes. Known for specialized containers (open-top, flat-rack) and sea-rail multimodal solutions, plus heavy-lift and over-dimensional project cargo[reference:9].

1.96M TEUGlobal #5 oceanHeavy lift

Ningbo Port Southeast Logistics 宁波港东南物流

Port-affiliated

Leverages deep ties to Ningbo-Zhoushan, one of the world’s busiest ports. For cargo originating in Zhejiang or the Yangtze River Delta, port-side handling and vessel scheduling efficiency is the differentiator. Ranked #6 globally in 2026 with 1.82 million TEU[reference:10].

1.82M TEUGlobal #6 oceanNingbo gateway

Kerry Logistics (KLN) 嘉里物流

HK-listed

The Southeast Asia specialist within a Chinese portfolio, majority-controlled by SF Holding. 12 self-owned warehouses in Thailand and Malaysia; cold-chain strength; FBA head-haul and cross-border e-commerce fulfillment. 2026 interim revenue HK$29.85 billion, mainland China revenue up 19% on high-tech manufacturing and exports[reference:11][reference:12].

~1.15M TEUGlobal #11 oceanAir #7 global

CIMC Wetrans 中集世联达

Multimodal

The rising star. 960,000 TEU, global #13, up one place year on year. One of the few Chinese forwarders to appear on both the ocean and air Top 50 lists, reflecting a deliberate multimodal build. 2025 revenue RMB 13.945 billion, up 2.7%[reference:13].

960K TEUGlobal #13 oceanAir Top 50

CTS International 华贸物流

Listed

Global #18 ocean, #15 air by Armstrong. Building an “overseas-to-overseas” self-circulation logistics channel rather than only China-outbound lanes. Automotive logistics is a stated internationalization pillar. Air tonnage ranks #14 in the Transport Topics air Top 50[reference:15].

The air ranking looks different

Ocean volume leaders are not always air cargo leaders

Sixteen Chinese companies appear on the 2026 global air freight Top 50 as well, but the order changes. Air tonnage rewards different capabilities: freighter access, e-commerce consolidation and airport hub control.

Global air rankCompanyAir tonnage (est.)Why it ranks here
#6Sinotrans 中国外运912,000 tonnesScale plus Asia’s largest air forwarding network; 2025 air volume 91.2万吨 including 6.9万吨 cross-border e-commerce
#7Kerry Logistics (KLN) 嘉里物流840,500 tonnesSE Asia e-commerce and FBA head-haul; double-digit air volume growth from mainland China and Europe in 1H26[reference:18]
#9AWOT 欧华国际785,000 tonnesAir-first forwarder; ocean rank is #44, but air rank is top 10 — a stark illustration of mode specialization
#14CTS International 华贸物流—Armstrong ranks its air business #15 globally; stronger in air than its ocean rank suggests[reference:21]
#25COSCO Shipping Logistics—Air is smaller relative to its ocean scale, but still Top 25 globally

Air tonnage data from Transport Topics 2026 Global Air Freight Forwarders Top 50; Armstrong & Associates composite rankings cited separately. AWOT is the clearest case of mode specialization: it is not an ocean volume leader, but it is a top-10 global air forwarder.

How to read the ranking

Three caveats the list itself does not explain

Volume ≠ service for your shipment

  • State-owned giants are built for tenders. Sinotrans and COSCO optimize for annual multi-lane RFQs and large BCO accounts. A 2-pallet LCL or a single 40HQ is not their commercial priority, and response cycles for spot quotes are measured in weeks, not hours[reference:23].
  • TEU counts all containers equally. A 20GP and a 40HQ each count as one TEU in some normalizations; the ranking does not distinguish cargo complexity, dangerous goods, temperature control or project cargo.
  • Air and ocean rankings reward different networks. AWOT at #44 ocean / #9 air is the proof. A forwarder that is mid-table in ocean can be top-tier in air, and vice versa.

What the ranking does not measure

  • Origin-port presence. A forwarder ranked #6 globally may have no dedicated team at your specific factory’s nearest port. Port coverage matters more than global rank for operational execution[reference:24].
  • Pricing model fit. Tender-based contract pricing, itemized spot pricing, all-in DDP and monthly published rates are different products. A top-5 forwarder’s contract model may not accept a 5-CBM spot booking at a competitive rate[reference:25].
  • Responsiveness at small volume. The ranking measures annual throughput, not whether a 1-tonne air shipment gets a reply within 24 hours. For SMEs and e-commerce sellers, that gap is the whole decision.
Sinotrans’s 2025 revenue was RMB 96.81 billion, with net profit of RMB 4.02 billion. Its ocean agency volume grew 1.1% to 4.925 million TEU while revenue fell 9.5% — a reminder that volume leadership and margin leadership are not the same thing. The ranking measures the former, not the latter.

Choosing, not just ranking

Which tier actually matches your shipment

The “best” forwarder is not the one at the top of the table. It is the one whose operating model matches your volume, your origin port and your tolerance for a missed cut-off.

Your situationWhat matters mostWhich tier fitsWhat to verify before booking
Annual multi-lane tender, 500+ TEURate stability, capacity guarantee, compliance depthSinotrans, COSCO, Ningbo Port SEContract terms, free time, equipment guarantee, escalation clauses
Southeast Asia + China dual-origin e-commerceSE Asia warehouse network, FBA head-haul, cold chainKerry Logistics (KLN)Thailand/Malaysia warehouse capacity, FBA appointment success rate, 1H26 volume trend
Heavy lift, OOG, project cargoSpecial equipment, port engineering, carrier relationshipsCOSCO Shipping Logistics, Sinotrans project divisionFlat-rack / open-top availability, past over-dimensional references, port lifting capacity
Air-first, high-value or time-criticalAir tonnage, freighter access, AMS/DGR capabilityAWOT, CTS International, Sinotrans airAirline contracts, DGR 67th Edition readiness, lithium battery handling
SME, 1–15 CBM LCL, 100–500kg airResponsiveness, origin-port presence, transparent per-shipment pricingRegional / private specialists, not the volume top 5Quote turnaround time, CFS receiving capability, hidden destination charges, whether they answer the phone after booking

The last row is the one most rankings omit. A top-5 global forwarder is not structured to fight for a 3-CBM LCL booking; a private specialist at the same origin port may be. The right question is not “who is largest” but “who is built for my volume at my origin port”[reference:27].

Need a forwarder matched to your volume, not the ranking?

Send origin port, cargo size (CBM / chargeable kg), destination ZIP and whether you need port-to-port or DDP door-to-door. We will tell you which tier fits — including whether the volume leaders are the right call for your shipment.

FAQ

Questions about the ranking and how to use it

Which ranking is more credible — Transport Topics or Armstrong & Associates?

They answer different questions, and both are credible. Transport Topics ranks by TEU volume and is the standard for ocean capacity leadership. Armstrong & Associates uses a composite of logistics revenue, ocean volume and air tonnage, which surfaces forwarders that are strong in air or contract logistics but not ocean volume leaders. Sinotrans ranks #1 in Transport Topics ocean and #3 in Armstrong composite — both true, different measures. Use Transport Topics if you are buying container capacity; use Armstrong if you are evaluating a forwarder’s total logistics breadth.

Why is AWOT not in the ocean Top 10 but appears in the air section?

Because it is an air-first forwarder. AWOT ranks #44 globally in ocean TEU but #9 globally in air tonnage — 785,000 tonnes. This is the clearest illustration in the 2026 data that ocean and air rankings reward different networks. If your cargo is air freight, the ocean Top 10 is the wrong shortlist.

Can I book directly with Sinotrans or COSCO for a small shipment?

You can approach them, but the commercial model is built for annual tenders and large BCO accounts. Their pricing and response cycles are optimized for multi-lane RFQs, not a 3-CBM LCL or a single 40HQ spot booking. For smaller volumes, a regional or private specialist at your origin port is usually the more responsive and competitively priced path — not because the giants cannot physically move the cargo, but because your shipment is not their commercial priority[reference:31].

What does “TEU” in the ranking actually count?

TEU is twenty-foot equivalent unit — a 20GP is 1 TEU, a 40GP or 40HQ is 2 TEU. The ranking normalizes container volume, but it does not distinguish cargo complexity, dangerous goods, temperature control or project cargo. A forwarder handling 1 million TEU of simple general cargo and one handling 500,000 TEU of complex project and DG cargo are not directly comparable on operational capability, even if the TEU number looks decisive.

Kerry Logistics is listed under Hong Kong — is it a Chinese company?

It is Hong Kong-headquartered and HK-listed, and it appears in Chinese forwarder rankings because its mainland China operations and Asia network are integral to China-origin trade. SF Holding (顺丰) is its controlling shareholder, and its 2026 interim results show mainland China revenue up 19% on high-tech manufacturing and export improvement. In the context of China–US freight, it operates as a Chinese-market forwarder with a Southeast Asia specialization[reference:32][reference:33].

If I already have a forwarder, why should I look at this ranking?

Use it as a benchmark, not a shopping list. Compare your current forwarder’s lane-level pricing and transit against what the ranking implies about scale and network. But do not switch purely on rank. The operational questions that determine a good outcome — origin-port presence, quote turnaround, transparent destination charges, and whether they answer the phone when a cut-off moves — are not captured by TEU volume[reference:34].
